How to Use Canva with Our DTF Gang Sheet Builder (Step-by-Step)

If you're designing your DTF transfers in Canva, you're already ahead of the game. Canva is one of the easiest tools for creating clean, print-ready artwork — but there are a few things you need to know before uploading to our DTF Gang Sheet Builder. Follow this guide and you'll be printing perfect transfers every time.

Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas at the Right Size

Before you start designing, you need to set your canvas to the actual size you want the finished transfer to be on the garment. This is important — if your canvas is the wrong size, your transfer will print too big or too small.

Here's how to create a custom size in Canva:

  1. Open Canva and click Create a design in the top right corner.
  2. Click Custom size from the dropdown.
  3. Enter your design dimensions. For example:
    • A standard left chest logo: 4" × 4" → enter 1200 × 1200 px (at 300 DPI)
    • A full front design: 12" × 14" → enter 3600 × 4200 px
    • A sleeve hit: 3" × 3" → enter 900 × 900 px
  4. Set units to Pixels and click Create new design.

Pro tip: To get the right pixel count, multiply your desired inch measurement by 300. So a 4-inch design = 4 × 300 = 1200 pixels per side. This ensures your transfer prints at full quality.

Step 2: Design Without a Background

This is the most important step for DTF printing. Your design needs a transparent background — meaning no white box or colored background around your artwork. DTF transfers print only the colors in your design, so any white background will show up as white ink on your garment.

To make sure your canvas has no background:

  1. Click on the white background of your design.
  2. If a background element is selected, press Delete on your keyboard to remove it.
  3. You should see a gray checkered pattern behind your design — that means the background is transparent. ✅

If you're using a template, always check that the background has been removed. Many templates include a white or colored background layer that needs to be deleted.

Step 3: Export as a PNG with Transparent Background

PNG is the only file format you should use for DTF transfers — it supports transparency, while JPG does not. Exporting as a JPG will give you a white background no matter what.

If You Have Canva Pro:

  1. Click the Share button in the top right corner.
  2. Select Download.
  3. Under "File type," choose PNG.
  4. Check the box that says "Transparent background."
  5. Click Download.

That's it! Your file will download as a PNG with a clean transparent background, ready to upload to our builder.

If You're Using Canva Free:

The "Transparent background" checkbox is a Canva Pro feature, but there's still a way to get a clean file:

  1. Make sure you deleted the background from your canvas (see Step 2 above).
  2. Click Share → Download → PNG.
  3. If Canva is showing the transparent background option grayed out, you can upgrade to Pro, or use a free tool like Remove.bg to strip the white background from your exported file.

Free workaround tip: Design your artwork on a bright green or hot pink background, export as PNG, then use Remove.bg or Photopea (free) to remove that background color. This is a common trick used by designers and works great for simple logos and graphics.

Step 4: Check Your File Before Uploading

Before heading to the gang sheet builder, do a quick quality check on your exported file:

  • File type: Should be .PNG — not .jpg, .pdf, or .svg
  • Background: Open the file on your computer. The area around your design should appear as a checkerboard pattern (transparent), not white.
  • Size: Your file size should be at least several hundred KB. Very small file sizes (under 100 KB) usually mean low resolution.
  • Edges: Zoom in on the edges of your design. They should be clean and sharp, not blurry or pixelated.

Step 5: Upload to Our DTF Gang Sheet Builder

Now the fun part — building your gang sheet!

  1. Go to our DTF Gang Sheet Builder.
  2. Click Upload Artwork and select your PNG file(s) from your computer.
  3. Set the print size for each design — this should match the canvas dimensions you set up in Canva (e.g., 4" × 4").
  4. Set the quantity for each design. You can add multiple different designs and mix quantities — that's the whole point of a gang sheet!
  5. Our builder will automatically arrange your designs to fill the sheet efficiently.
  6. Review your layout, then add to cart and check out.

It's that simple. We'll print your gang sheet, and your transfers will arrive ready to heat press.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Uploading a JPG: JPGs always have a white background. Always use PNG.
  • Designing too small: If your Canva canvas is only 500 × 500 px, your print will be blurry. Use the 300 DPI formula: inches × 300 = pixels.
  • Leaving the background on: Double-check that you removed the background before exporting. Click on the white area of your canvas — if something is selected, delete it.
  • Using low-resolution images inside your design: Canva lets you drag in photos and clipart. If the source image is low resolution, it will look blurry when printed. Use high-res graphics (300 DPI or higher) inside your design.
  • Not matching your print size: If you design a 12" canvas but tell the builder to print it at 4", the details will be tiny and possibly unreadable. Always match your upload size to your intended print size.

Quick Settings Cheat Sheet

  • File format: PNG
  • Background: Transparent (checkerboard)
  • Resolution: Design at 300 DPI — multiply inches × 300 for pixel count
  • Color mode: RGB (Canva exports in RGB by default — perfect for DTF)
  • Upload to builder: Set print size to match your Canva canvas dimensions
