DTF Printing vs Screen Printing: Which Is Right for Your Project?
When it comes to custom apparel, two of the most popular decoration methods are DTF (direct-to-film) printing and screen printing. Both produce great results, but they each have strengths and limitations that make them better suited for different types of projects.
At Sew N Pressed Customs, we help Long Island businesses, teams, and event organizers choose the right method for their needs every day. Here's an honest, side-by-side comparison to help you decide.
The Quick Answer
Choose DTF printing if you have a complex, multi-color design, need a small quantity (under ~200 pieces), want to print on polyester or dark fabrics, or need fast turnaround with no setup fees.
Choose screen printing if you have a simple 1-4 color design, need a large quantity (200+ pieces), want the absolute longest-lasting print, or are printing on 100% cotton.
How They Work
Screen printing is one of the oldest printing methods. A separate mesh screen is created for each color in your design. Ink is pushed through the screens onto the garment one color at a time. For a 4-color design, that means 4 screens and 4 passes.
DTF printing is a modern digital method. Your full-color design is printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder, and then heat-pressed onto the garment. The entire design — all colors, gradients, and details — is applied in a single press.
Cost Comparison
Small orders (1-50 pieces): DTF wins. Screen printing requires creating physical screens, which adds a setup cost of $25-75+ per color. DTF has zero setup costs — you pay per piece from piece one.
Medium orders (50-200 pieces): It's close. The screen printing setup cost gets spread across more pieces, narrowing the gap. DTF is often still more economical, especially for designs with many colors.
Large orders (200+ pieces): Screen printing usually wins. Once the screens are made, the per-piece cost drops significantly.
Print Quality & Detail
DTF excels at reproducing fine detail, photographic images, gradients, and designs with many colors. Screen printing produces bold, vibrant colors with excellent ink coverage. Simple logos and text look incredibly sharp.
Bottom line: DTF for detail and complexity. Screen printing for bold simplicity.
Durability
Both methods are durable when done properly. Screen printing has a slight edge — screen-printed ink can last 100+ washes. DTF prints typically last 50+ washes without significant fading or cracking. For most purposes, both will outlast the garment itself.
Fabric Compatibility
DTF works on virtually any fabric — cotton, polyester, nylon, blends, and performance fabrics. Screen printing works best on cotton and cotton-dominant blends.
